Vico Magistretti

Born in Milan, Italian industrial designer Vico Magistretti became well-known for his furniture design and architecture. In 1945 he graduated from Politecnico di Milano University. Throughout his illustrious career he worked for a range of design studios, including De Padora, Fritz Hansen, and notably, the Cassina company for whom he produced his first success, the famous Carimate Chair. The Carimate Chair combined urban sophistication with rural simplicity, using smooth lines – a key element of Scandinavian design. Magistretti aimed to mass-produce well-designed goods that were both functional and simple.

In 1948 he was awarded the Gran Premio at the 8th Triennale, following which he won various awards and prizes. He received a nomination for Royal Designer for Industry by the Royal Academy of Arts and was an honorary member of the Royal Scottish Incorporation of Architects.
