Xavier P. 1880 - 1948

Little appears to be recorded about the designer of the iconic Tolix range, Xavier Pauchard. We know that he was born in Le Morvan, France in 1880 and that he worked as a zinc roofer with his father and grandfather. Following the First World War, he was in charge of a galvanised sheet metal manufacturer, where he produced household items, and discovered that he could protect sheet metal from rusting by dipping it in molten zinc.

This manufacturer produced domestic items, and by 1934 under Pauchard’s charge, had produced the first Tolix chair. The popularity of this chair flourished, alongside other Tolix designs. The popular Tolix chair can be found in factories, offices, cafes and even on a ship!
